Ogun denies theft of babies in government hospital

The Ogun State government yesterday refuted speculations of the theft of five babies from the state government-owned Oba Ademola Maternity Hospital, located in Ijemo area of Abeokuta.
Information had spread across the state and environs that some suspected hoodlums forced their way into the hospital and took away five recently delivered babies to an unknown destination.
The alleged ugly development had become the talk of the town, being discussed inside commercial vehicles, market places, and relaxation centres.
However, the state commissioner for health, Isiaq Salako, while reacting to the issue in a statement in Abeokuta, said there was no truth in the rumour.
The commissioner, in a statement signed by the ministry’s press officer, Kunle Ewuoso, described the report as untrue and very unfortunate.
“There was no point in time that such a nasty occurrence happened in any of the government hospitals. Its very sad and unfortunate that rumour mongers could come up with such bad statements,” he said.
Political rumour
The statement, therefore, called on the entire populace, particularly pregnant women to disregard the rumour, adding that government had put in place adequate security measures in all the state-owned hospitals to forestall any unfortunate incidence.
The management of the hospital had denied losing any babies, but directed reporters to the state government for information as they could not speak to the press.
Mr. Salako appealed to residents of the state to be wary of rumour mongers, saying rumour mongering should be expected to increase as general elections draw nearer.
