GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the President of the Catholic Women Organisation in Dagbala, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state, Mrs Catherine Aliu, who was killed by political thugs during the recent National and State Houses of Assembly primaries of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in the state.
Oshiomhole who gave immediate employment to Boniface Aliu, first son of the deceased and also directed that the primary school where she was murdered while exercising her civic responsibility be reconstructed in memory of the late woman, hinted that some of the suspects have been arrested and will face prosecution after investigations were completed.
While addressing elders of the community and mother of the deceased, Madam Deborah Abu, the Governor, who was in company of the Edo North senatorial candidate of the ACN in the forthcoming elections, Deacon Domingo Obende, recalled how he warned all aspirants prior to the primaries to desist from thuggery, expressing regret that the aspirant, who hired the thugs that unleashed the mayhem was not one of those who won the primaries “but an aspirant who was disqualified. Honesty, I would have used that aspirant as an example because the person would have been disqualified and also jailed.”
According to him, “her killing by some hoodlums and thugs is something that we not only condemn but we will also pursue the killers and bring them to justice. I have always campaigned to our people that election is not war and that the language of democracy is ballot box and ballot paper.”
I don’t see any justification for anyone to carry guns to an election area”.
Adding that that the police had already impounded the care allegedly used by the killers and pledged the state government’s assistance towards the burial ceremony of the deceased, Governor Oshiomhole however urged the people of the area not to give up because Nigeria cannot make it if the people are not responsible for who governs them.
Because now politicians who know that very ordinary people can make them, rather than spending time at government house or in my house they will go and meet the people who will decide their fate.
“When you look at the primaries of that result now, you will find out that those who were predicted to win most of them lost. Some who alleged they have no god father, they won and for me that is the beauty of democracy. But it is unfortunate that this now took the life of some body. Even some people who thought they have bought over some leaders lost in the primaries and that is why we must not give up”.
The Governor’s emotional speech doused the tension in the area, as both the Catholic Priest and elders of the area, commended him for showing sympathy to the family and assured him of their continuous support to his government.
