At the occasion, where 8,209 students were awarded various diploma and degree certificates, the Minister for Education, Prof. Ruquayyat Rufa’i, called on Nigerian students to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise to enable them to vote for good leaders during the 2011 polls.
Ajibola was the only distinguished Nigerian that was honoured with the honorary doctorate degree (honoris causa) in Law during the convocation while Osagie was conferred with the Distinguished Professor award for his contributions and researches in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics.
The university Orator, Prof. V.B. Owhotu, while reading his citation, said that Osagie, the most senior professor in his area of specialisation at UNILAG, made history when he, in conjunction with Prof. Dapo Ashiru, pioneered the human in-vitro fertilisation, otherwise known as test tube babies, in Nigeria and in West and East Africa.
This, he said, had brought succour to many childless couples in Africa.
Others who were honoured with the award of the Emeritus Professors of the institutions at the ceremony included two renowned historians, Professors Akinjide Oshuntokun and Anthony Ijaola Asiwaju of the Department of History and Strategic Studies of the institution.
Others are Prof. Isaac Oluwole Agbede and Prof. Akintunde Olusegun Ibilade, both are of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law; Prof. Adedokun Adeyemi, (Public Law); Prof. Thomas Anthony Emokpai, (Chemistry); and Prof. Kola Kusemiju (Marine Science).
Ajibola, who responded on behalf of the recipients said he was so glad to be honoured by an institution, which he said, had produced distinguished professionals that had impacted his life positively.
The President had in a speech read on his behalf by Rufa’i said that as an educator himself, he was determined to revamp and reposition the nation’s education sector.
To achieve this, he said that he had convened a national education summit to find lasting solutions to the problem bedevilling the sector.
Earlier, the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tokunbo Sofoluwe, had told the graduating students that all their certificates would be ready for collection within two weeks.
But he advised them to complete their clearance certificates before they could come for their certificates.
Awards and cash prizes were given to students who distinguished themselves in their studies by the university.
Dignitaries at the convocation included the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Chief Executive officer, IGi Insurance Company, Mr. Remi Olowude, the Pro-Chancellor of UNILAG, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode and principal officers of the institution.
