UNIJOS students protest stabbing by Muslim youths

The entire community of the University of Jos was thrown into confusion on Friday when students protested the stabbing of their colleague by a taxi driver.

Our correspondent gathered that trouble started when some Muslim youths said to be returning from a burial at Naraguta area suddenly went berserk and attacked the students in front of the gate leading to the permanent site of the university. In the process, the Muslim youths stabbed two students, who were said to be currently receiving treatment at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.

The stabbing angered their fellow students, who took to the streets to protest the dastardly act. In the process, five students were said to have been wounded. It could not be ascertained whether they were shot by the soldiers or the Muslim youths.

Students protested the presence of soldiers in the area and demanded that they should be allowed to deal with the Muslim youths

The incident sent shock waves to the university community as students in the Abuja Hostel and Students’ Village scampered to safety following gunshots fired into the air by the soldiers in an attempt to disperse the surging crowd.

Media Officer of the Special Task Force, Capt. Charles Ekeocha, who confirmed the incident, however, said that he had dispatched an officer to ascertain the true position.

Meanwhile, some women on Friday marched through the streets of Jos to protest the recent wave of killings in the city. The women, who wore black attire, marched through major streets of Jos and its environs. They marched through the Yakubu Gowon Way, Secretariat Junction to the Government House in Jishe.

Attempts by our correspondent to speak with the leader of the women were rebuffed.
