Jonathan vows to transform Nigeria’s economy

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday pledged to transform the nation’s economy, if elected in the April presidential poll.

The President, who addressed his supporters in the Kogi State capital, Lokoja, during his caampaign in the state, noted that his efforts at improving the economy would make the lives of Nigerians more meaningful.

Jonathan said his administration would also strive to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Complex and the Itakpe Iron Ore Company.

Jonathan promised to explore the agricultural potential of the state to boost food security and assured the people that they would benefit from the new federal university in the state. The President said the state had over the years produced eminent and selfless personalities.

In his speech, Vice-President Namadi Sambo promised that the Jonathan administration would transform the country through the provision of qualitative education and stable power supply in the next four years.

Meanwhile, the Bukola Saraki Youth Vanguard, Oyun Chapter has promised to ensure a violence-free visit for the President on Tuesday (today).


The group’s leader, Mr Adetoye Omokanye, told newsmen at the Mandate Banquet Hall in Ilorin that they would ensure a peaceful campaign for Jonathan.

Also on Monday, the Kwara State Government said it had put in place ‘a water-tight’ security arrangement to ensure a hitch-free visit by Jonathan.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Ben Duntoye, the state government said all arrangements had been concluded to receive the President and members of his entourage.

The commissioner noted that Governor Bukola Saraki had saddled a 25-member planning committee with the responsibility of making Jonathan’s visit a memorable one. He said the President would arrive Ilorin by 10am and immediately proceed to the Emir of Ilorin’s palace.

Thereafter, Jonathan will head to the Metropolitan Square in the state capital for the presidential campaign.

At a press conference in his office, the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State command, Mr. Peter Gana, said about 4,000 policemen and other security agents would be deployed in Ilorin to maintain law and order during the President’s visit.

He explained that the DIG in charge of Administration, Mr. Azubuko Udah; the AIG Zone XI, Mr. Donald Iroham; and the Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi, Brig.-Gen. Saliu Bello, would coordinate the security team.
